About The State of Melaka

Now, let’s dive deeper into Melaka’s enchanting tapestry. Did you know that Melaka is the third smallest state in Malaysia? Yep, after Perlis and Penang.

Melaka Tengah is the heart of the state, where you can find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bandaraya Melaka and its colonial landmarks. Alor Gajah is the rural district that boasts scenic landscapes, traditional villages, and recreational parks. Jasin is the southernmost district that showcases the state’s agricultural heritage and natural wonders.

Melaka also encompasses two islands that are ideal for a relaxing getaway. Pulau Besar is a mystical island that has a serene beach and a sacred mausoleum. Pulau Upeh is a small island that is home to a rare species of sea turtles.

Nestled in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, Melaka boasts a picturesque coastline along the legendary Straits of Malacca. With its prime location, Melaka has been a melting pot of cultures, trade, and historical significance for centuries.

With Negeri Sembilan to the north and Johor to the south, Melaka is in great company. Oh, and if you’re wondering about distances, it’s about 148 km from Kuala Lumpur, 235 km from Johor Bahru, and a mere 245 km north of Singapore.

Getting here is a breeze too!

Melaka is connected by the PLUS North-South Expressway, making it easily accessible. Driving to Melaka on your own is easy. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and let the adventure begin!

Climate

Now, let’s talk climate. Malaysia’s equatorial climate ensures that temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year. It’s a warm one, with daytime temperatures around 32°C and a cooler 22°C at night. So, dress comfortably, stay hydrated, and don’t forget that trusty sunscreen!

Currency

Ah, money matters. In Melaka, just like the rest of Malaysia, the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) reigns supreme. If you’re curious about exchange rates, here’s a little snippet for you:

CurrencyRate (1 Unit to MYR)
USD4.5005
GBP5.6207
EURO4.8911
SGD3.3642

There rates above are as of 15th May 2023.

Make sure to have some in your pocket to indulge in the city’s culinary delights, shop for unique souvenirs, or simply treat yourself to a local experience that will leave you wanting more.

People

Let’s talk about the people of Melaka. The majority are Malays, making up about 57% of the population in Malaysia. But don’t worry, we’re all about diversity here! Chinese, Indians, and other ethnic groups contribute to the vibrant mix that makes our community so special. Embrace the warm hospitality and immerse yourself in the fusion of traditions, languages, and flavors that will make your stay unforgettable.

Language

Language-wise, Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) takes the crown as the national language. However, English is widely spoken too, ensuring smooth communication for our visitors. Plus, you’ll also hear various languages and dialects spoken by the diverse ethnic groups, making Melaka a truly multicultural experience.

Religon

And finally, religion. While Islam is the official religion, Malaysia upholds freedom of religion. That means everyone is free to practice their own faith, creating a harmonious tapestry of beliefs and traditions. Explore the magnificent mosques, temples, and churches that coexist harmoniously, each with its own unique charm.

So, there you have it! A little bit about us, and a little bit about the state of Melaka. MelakaCool is your go-to guide for all things Melaka, where we’ll sprinkle a healthy dose of coolness.

I am amazed at the growth and vibrancy of Melaka since I served at Terendak 50 years ago. Truly wonderful. However I am nostalgic for how it was back in the mid 1960’s. I loved the climate. food and the people of all races and when I had to leave I didn’t want to go. When the packers arrived I went for a walk so as not to see my happy world being taken apart.. I want to try to get in touch with some people that I remember. Specifically I would like to share some photo’s I have for a beautiful Malay style wedding my family and I were invited to at Kampong Kerubong. Many of the children I photographed would be parents themselves now. Could your wonderful newspaper help in any way. Thank you in anticipation. Rick Clare

    • Hi there Rick.
I just got to know this website and saw your posting dated 2018. I feel obligated to respond since you did not get any for 5 years since your posting here.
In summary, Krubong where you attended a wedding function is now an industrial township with factories as well as shops & residential housing. An expressway runs thru that township connecting it to the North-South highway of the country.
Terendak Camp remains an iconic presence till today in Sungai Udang town which has since grown into an every expanding township with the help of the Petronas Oil Refinery plant built years ago in mid 1990s. You can get further info from me at my email: terry_ypk@yahoo.com
